Existence_The Sculptures of Masa’aki Maruyama

The sculptures of Masa’aki Maruyama possess an innate gravity-like force that draws the viewer in. Among the pieces on display at this exhibition, I look at a bronze sculpture, which, at first glance, is a cuboid. My gaze, captured by this moderate size sculpture, moves across its surface discovering its organic, soft aspects.

Measuring existence between abundance and emptiness

Taking measurements is difficult. The bronze sculptures made by Maruyama Masaaki refuse a tape ready for measurement. In his purification of the familiar formal landscape, the imponderables of all existence remain, and so we do not look at a cold uniformity of strictly drawn lines and surfaces. What sculptural relationships are depicting here are states of being, bodies and relationships between bodies. Identity becomes visible, as well as difference. Identity, in this body of work, is shown as something individual as well as a matter of co-existing, existing along with others.
